Nickie Alfonso caught so many shrimp Friday night he ran out of storage space, and had to stack them on his deck. The migration of the shrimp out of the marshes will have impacts to speckled trout fishing over the next several weeks. Photo: laspecks.com

Nickie Alfonso, 47, has been dragging and pushing shrimp nets in the marshes around Delacroix Island, both as a deckhand and later as a captain, since he was too little too see over the steering wheel.
He has never once in his entire life witnessed what happened Friday night after the passage of this surprisingly stiff October cold front.
“It’s the biggest haul I’ve ever seen,” Alfonso said, “not just for me — for everybody.”
Shrimpers caught monster amounts of shrimp everywhere in Delacroix, including in Bayou Terre aux Bouefs, the waterway that runs in front of the camps, houses and marinas in Delacroix.
